When can I
join Little Athletics?
The Little
Athletic year begins in October and runs through to the following
September. You can register at any time during the athletic year
providing you are between the age of 5 and 14.
You must be
5 years of age to join.
How much
does Little Athletics cost?
Cost of
registration for the 2007/2008 season will be as follows:
Registration is for 12 months.
What do the
kids do?
Competition
day is Saturday morning, however some Friday night twilight meetings
are also held. The children participate in a selection of different
events that rotate on a 3 or 4 week cycle.
What are
the events?

Sprints (70m, 100m, 200m), Middle distance depending on age group
(400m, 800m), Long Distance again dependant on age group
(1500m) running.

Hurdles depending on age (60m, 80m 300m)

Long Jump/Triple Jump/High Jump

Shot Put/Discus
-
Relays
-
Cross Country
-
Javelin for (Under 12 - Under 15 only)

Skills Development Programs are held specifically for boys and
girls in the U6 - U8 age groups
What time
does the program run? How long is it?
A Saturday
morning program would usually begin 8:30am with warm up exercises and
finishes around 11:30am, with the younger age groups finishing
earlier.
Where is
it?
Competitions are run
at Hagenauer's Reserve, Elgar Road Box Hill.
Cross
Country
During the
Winter Cross Country season, the program is around 1½ hours long.
Cross
country is usually held at an appropriate local location.
How long is
the season?
The Track
and Field season begins in mid September and runs through until around
Easter.
It is usual
for a break to occur from Christmas until mid to late January.
Cross
Country begins around April/May and runs through to July.
How are the
kids performances monitored?
All Little
athlete's performances in all events are recorded during the program.
Children receive a sheet of stickers detailing these performances at
either the end of the day or the next week. These stickers are placed
in a ‘sticker book’ provided where performances can be assessed by the
child.
What other
forms of competition are there?
During the
season, there are:

Open Days - Competition at other Centres and a chance to compete
against other little athletes in Victoria

Regional competitions (for U9 to U15) - Competition with other
Centres within the Eastern Metropolitan Region

State competitions - Children are progressed from Region to State
Competition to compete against all regions in Victoria
What is
expected of Parents?
-
Without parents, there is no Little Athletics.
-
The help of all parents is greatly appreciated and acknowledged by
within the Box Hill Little Athletics community.

Parents are expected to assist with the operation of Little Aths
by carrying out a duty. The number of times that this is required
is generally every 3rd week. There are several types of duties
possible; most parents enjoy officiating at an event. Other
typical club type activities are canteen, club administration,
etc.

Additional assistance is always welcomed on the Centre and Club
committees.
What is
expected of the Children?
Children
must:

Is there
any training provided?
Further
training is provided in all events by a range of qualified parents
acting as coaches and is usually held on Wednesday nights at
Hagenauer's Reserve
during the season.
What about
Safety, Insurance and First Aid?
Each Little
Athletics Centre is required to have a safety policy and Insurance is
provided by the Victorian Little Athletics Association.
First Aid
is also provided at competitions and training.
What types
of awards/trophies are presented?
At the end
of each season, presentations are made to children based on:
Trophies,
Medals and certificates are typically awarded.
What level
of ability do children have to have to join?
Our
emphasis is on fun and fitness. Children can join with any level of
skill or fitness. Children are given plenty of encouragement to
achieve personal bests.
What is
available to children with disabilities?
All
children are encouraged to join. There are no specific programs.
Can
children try Little Aths before joining?
Yes, come
and try days are conducted at the beginning of the season.
